About the Symposium

Theme and Aim

The Hong Kong Continuing Professional Development Symposium will be held on 30 May 2018 with post-symposium events on 31 May and 1 June 2018. It addresses the theme of “Higher education best practices – English teaching and learning in Hong Kong”. This major annual event, organised by the Hong Kong Continuing Professional Development Hub (HKCPD Hub) for University English Teachers, aims to provide a dynamic platform for University Language Centre English teachers to share best practices and research findings with a view to encouraging more informed and effective teaching, leading to concomitant improvements in learning.

For five years during the preparation of the 4-year new curriculum, English teachers of Language Centres in Hong Kong universities gathered for annual symposia to discuss curriculum development issues. Now that the changes have been implemented, it is important that we share the lessons learnt and learn from each other to further develop English language education in the Hong Kong tertiary context.

This symposium is an excellent opportunity for all of us to meet, network, discuss, and learn from each other and explore opportunities for greater collaboration to encourage and sustain interactive communities of practice.  Ultimately, the Symposium is an opportunity to promote effective teaching practices and disseminate innovative research aimed at improving the quality of English teaching and learning in higher education in Hong Kong.
